SENT TO DEATH
·
SENT TO DEATH
The deportation of a convention refugee to a place where his or her life is in danger is against an international treaty that was signed by the
USA
.
For political reasons, I was tortured and I fled my country,
Romania
. As a victim of torture there, I developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) gave me the status of MANDATE REFUGEE under the Refugee Protocol, International Protection. This should have given me the right to be protected.
After an interview that hundreds of
United States
legal organizations are currently contesting as being an unfair interview, I was denied asylum in the
USA
.
Without a safe place to go, and fearful of being deported, the only choice I had was to live illegally in the “Land of the Free.’’ I therefore ran my own private business, working as a freelancer in landscape design, audio design, and later on as a captain and boat dealer in
San Francisco
Bay
. So, as you can see, the PTSD has not made me an irresponsible person. I do my business legally, I drive car without injuring people, I navigate boats in extreme weather condition and I bring everybody back to shore, safe and sound.
At the time I was doing this, I paid my taxes and did an honest business. My clients appreciated me and were highly satisfied with the quality of my services.
Then one day, my driving license was checked at a traffic stop and arrested because I WAS TOLD I WAS “WANTED” NATIONWIDE by IMMIGRATION for not presenting myself previously for DEPORTATION
From San Francisco I was sent to what seemed like a “concentration camp,” Eloy Detention Center in Arizona, a facility run by the Correctional Corporation of America (CCA) and rented from the Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). This facility has been the subject of human rights violations accusations, including physical and sexual abuse of immigrant inmates, poor living conditions, overcrowding and medical negligence. The degrading way that immigrants are treated there, and the abuse, are enough to cause any innocent immigrant to develop psychiatric illness, or even to commit a crime. Indeed, the suffering from incarceration in this detention center could easily lead to an immigrant being labelled as “mentally insane,” and so be deported.
Under my status as a Mandate Refugee, and facing deportation to certain death in the country from which I had fled, my terrible treatment and experience in Eloy made me very worried for my future and well being.
The thought of the past torture reactivated my PTSD. I started having again horrifying nightmares, severe anxiety and flashbacks. And I started thinking about suicide as my only reasonable course of action, rather than be forced into the hands of people who tortured me and want me dead if I return to my country.
Recently the CIA use to have secret torture center in
Romania
US Intelligence knew very well that the Romanian Government does not play around and that I would be killed if I returned there.
In
Eloy
Detention
Center
, I was seen by a psychiatrist, John Lee, who barely paid attention to what I said about my plight. He put me on olanzapine, an antipsychotic medication. I refused to take it. I felt that Dr Lee, who got a job with Homeland Security, really was not concerned about my own or other inmates’ health, but had a hatred of immigrants, and was simply there to make money and take his own personal problems out on immigrants in the facility. His treatment was, to me, criminal, though officially it was considered legal.
By bad luck I informed attorney, Kara Hartzler, from the Florence Project, who, unprofessionally, did not keep confidentiality between client and attorney, and she told Dr Lee about my concerns over human rights abuse. He understood immediately the dangers of him becoming exposed, especially if information appeared in the media, particularly with allegations of human rights abuse already being an issue with
Eloy
Detention
Center
.
Overnight, I was deported, to cover this human rights violation, this CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY, including administration of psychotropic medications against peoples’ will, disgraceful and abusive incarceration conditions, deporting innocent immigrants and endangering their lives. These are contrary to the US Constitution, to the US Criminal Code, and to the Human Rights and the Refugee Protocol.
I lost my respect for the
United States
, supposedly the land of freedom and justice and supposedly the right for life, liberty and happiness. I was in the Eloy jail for 3 years, without
committing
any crime that I knew of. I lost my over $100,000 property; I lost my wife, my friends I lost everything! And I was deported to likely death.
Do I have to to live the rest of my life with such insecurity as being an “Internationally Protected Person?” As a mandate refugee? A man who belongs nowhere? Or should I just kill myself?
